Article #4
There is no way to tell when you might find yourself in the middle of a street fight.
But when you do, you better be prepared.
It is always suggested to avoid fighting but sometimes you might find yourself in a situation where you either have to fight for yourself or get beaten. In order to protect yourself and others it is important that you not only know how to fight but know how to win a fight as well.
There are multiple factors that determine whether the fight is won or lost. One thing
is being fit and knowing self defense techniques and anatomy to work on the weak
spots. Other things start to matter when the fight actually emerges. Stay alert,
extremely aware of your opponent and surroundings, be confident. If you let your
fitness and theoretical knowledge work for you and you take advantage of the given
situation, you are on your way on knowing how to win a fight.
In a fight, the strongest, the smartest, the most agile and the one that is more familiar with the surroundings has obvious advantages. If someone is threatening you, pay attention to the situation. Evaluate your opponent to determine what kind of advantages do you have.
If you are facing a well known boxer there is no way how you can outbox him unless you have more experience. If that is not the case, you can have other advantages that might work for you. Be confident in that you know how to win a fight.
It is always beneficial to be aware of your environment. Each object can be used
either as a weapon or a trap. You can also use shadows and reflections to determine
your surroundings. Make sure you maintain your balance so that you can stay on your
feet. Stay at a distance from your opponent and try to face his side instead of his
front. Keep your guard up and be ready to strike.
Don't start the fight by shoving your opponent because it would show him that you
aren't ready to fight for real and also gives him an excuse to punch you back as
hard as he wants. In case you get shoved, be ready to punch him as soon as he enters
the striking distance.
Always punch as hard as you can. Use your whole body to push all of its force through the surface of your fist. Halfhearted jabs no matter how many will only waste your energy. If you know how to fight, you worry about hurting your opponent not about getting yourself hurt. This doesn't mean forgetting about defenses. Keep your head up to gain the best visibility on order to predict the next move of your assaulter, and keep your arms just below eyes to protect your face. Keep your mouth closed because a punch in an open mouth can result with a broken jaw.
When facing multiple attackers the situation and tactics change dramatically. It
is not anymore about how to win a fight but about how to survive.
First thing you should always remember -
Stay on your feet because if you're down, even the people who normally aren't into kicking could join. As long as you are up, you have greater chances to stay alive and probably escape. Keep them in front of you and at a distance if possible. If they approach you, back off. If one gets too close, punch him hard aiming to knock him off. Your life is at stake. Don't let them all attack you at once. If they do so, punch your way out of the circle to keep them in front of you again. Keep your head up and fight to survive.
